Cormorant with an Eel

Cormorants were all over at Conowingo Dam. The Double-Breasted Cormorant looks prehistoric. Most that have been around water have seen these birds. They are pretty good at fishing, diving below the water’s surface and popping up with a fish.

I never saw them with a slimy eel though. Eels seem like a slippery and feisty meal.

Below, the bird caught a fish. They always seem like they get a meal too big to swallow, but they get them down. The cormorant had a bit of trouble getting that fish pointed the right way.

On Garden Walk Garden Talk, I have the eagles and hawks that I saw and photographed. I have a few nature trips planned so I should have enough images for both blogs.

  1. Wow! Those are amazing photos!

  2. It’s always surprising how birds get their meal swallowed up. Often their prey not only seems to be far too big but also still extremely wild and unruly – defending itself, of course.
Your pictures of the cormorant struggling a bit with the eel are awesome! I’m looking rather forward to further photos on this blog or on Garden Walk Garden Talk!

  3. Caught in the act! What a capture! Happy Thursday greetings! 🙂 xx

That eel is amazing to see caught like that!

Nice captures! I think that for a couple of the photos you could convert them to B&W, add a little Guassian blur, and then pass them off as photos of Nessie or your favorite lake monster. 🙂

  6. Wow! What an exciting thing to see happen before your eyes. So great that you captured it on camera to share.

Amazing captures and cool blog! I initially noticed your “cormorant vs eel” captures here.

Wow that looks like a huge eel caught and staring down it’s captors throat here! So could the cormorant really manage to win the battle and gulp that entire thing down okay??

Does the eel put up a good fight, if eaten, does the unlucky prey get swallowed alive all the way down that long/skinny neck really?!
